    • Wales on Sunday - Sunday 10 October 1999 Page 12 Irish war hero finally honoured BELFAST has honoured one of its greatest war heroes - 54 years after he was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry. James Magennis was the only serviceman from Northern Ireland to be awarded the VC during the Second World War but his bravery went largely unmarked post-war Belfast. Now a six-foot memorial has been erected to Leading Seaman Magennis in the City Hall grounds. ---
    • Portadown Times - Friday 13 February 1998. But there are many other Ulstermen and Irishmen whose brave exploits have been forgotten and whose deeds have gone unrecognised in the land of their birth Beltast man Mr George Fleming, who campaigned successtully to have a memorial erected to Leading Seaman Magennis, the only Ulsterman to be awarded the VC in World War Two, has turned his attention to another 24 ex-servicemen born in what is now Northern Ireland and were awarded the Victoria Cross in the 19th century. Mr Fleming believes these itis time these forgotten VCs should be remembered and is urging all local politicians to try and see that proper memorials are erected in the district council area of Northern Ireland where they were born. ---
