Inscription: IN HONOUR AND LOVE/ TO THE DEAR MEMORY OF/ FRANCIS CHARLES LACAITA M.C./ 17TH LANCERS CAPT COMMANDING 1ST MACHINE/ GUN SQUADRON ONLY SON OF CHARLES/ CARMICHAEL & MARY ANNABEL LACAITA/ BORN 19 OCT 1867 KILLED IN ACTION 4 APR 1918/ NEAR HAMEL ON THE SOMME/ Qui procul hinc / Qui ante diem periit / Sed miles sed pro patria. Translation: "He who died so far from home, died before his time: but he was a soldier, and it was for his country he died." I have fought a good fight. I have finished / my course. I have kept faith.
