- Description
- An area in the North-West corner of the church has been separated off with low-level carved oak panelling to form a Children's Chapel. Two carved angels guard the entrance - St Michael holding a (broken) sword to the left, and St Gabriel holding a lily to the right, and along the top of the panelling each side of the entrance there is a carved dedication.
The memorial board is set into the panelling on the outside wall opposite, extending above the top of the panelling to reach the level of the window cill behind. The date and the dedication are carved across the top, beneath the cornice, and between carved be-ribboned laurel wreaths with a cross at their centre. The names are incised below. The panelling to the East is at three levels, leading up to a central panel into which has been carved an image of St Christopher (the Patron Saint of children) carrying the Christ Child across a raging torrent. A small carved oak altar is set in front of this.
Above the memorial board has been set a wooden frame to carry the bell from HMS Ulysses, which was formerly in the local Royal British Legion Club until its closure. The carved wooden memorial board from the former Leigh Congregationalist Church has been installed beneath the memorial board, following the closure of the church, and the building being put to secular use. On the floor of the chapel, between the entrance and the memorial plaques, there is a plastic sheet into which a full-size image of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Westminster Abbey has been laminated.
