Information sheet: The War Memorial lists the sixteen young men lost to the village/ in the First World War. At the time it represented about 17% of/ the total male population of this small village. In some cases/
families lost more than one son and one extended family lost/ four. Contemporary newspaper reports of army training in the/ area record that young men were strongly encouraged to bring/ friends to future training sessions before being formally recruited/ and deployed to the battle grounds. This approach in a war with/ high casualty rates meant that groups of friends and brothers, as/ in Madingley, suffered high mortality rates. Only one name had/ to be added for the Second World War. Madingley had already/ made its major sacrifice and there were few men of call up age/ left to be available for military service.
