The clock tower memorial was fully funded by the Joicey family, owners of the local colliery. Clock tower memorials are very rare in Britain, a few exist in the Cynon Valley of South Wales - a mining area and also along the A.5 road in Anglesey - LlanfairPG, Gwalchmai and Llanfaelog (Rhosneigr). Information from people at Durham Miners' Gala 13/07/2019. The memorial also features on the official community banner and this paraded each year at the Gala and on Remembrance Day. (see image)
