Inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ CAPTAIN FREDERICK BATES/ OF THE S/S. "MEROE"./ COMMODORE OF THE/ MOSS STEAMSHIP CO. LIVERPOOL/ TORPEDOED IN THE MEDITERRANEAN/ OCTOBER 29TH 1916, AND DIED AS/ A RESULT OF SHELLSHOCK/ FEBRUARY 17TH 1919. AGED 57 YEARS./ "I HAVE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT,/ I HAVE KEPT THE FAITH."
