Memorial was originally the childrens ward of the Ilford Emergency Hospital. Tablets listing the names of those who had died were placed in the entrance hall. The ward was demolished with the rest of the hospital but the entrance to it was saved and now forms the current memorial which takes the form of a memorial hall. Name tablets remain in situ and are placed on the walls of the hall.

    Maintenance History
1995: Grade 2 listed. 2009: The Hall is open to visitors on selected days, please see the Ilford Memorial Gardens website for details. 2003-2005: Memorials and garden restored by Bellway Homes as part of a £500,000 package of initiatives for the wider community. Bellway intends to set up a dowry for the new owners or a trust to help pay for any future maintenance. 1990's and early 2000's: Original King George's Hospital closed and a new one was built further down along Eastern Avenue. Site acquired by Bellway to build homes on. Most of the original buildings were demolished apart from the entrance to the Children's Ward. However, its fate was uncertain and the building and gardens suffered vandalism. Local residents, supported by the War Memorials Trust and the Western Front Association, successfully campaigned for it to be saved and restored. Date unknown: Hospital was renamed King George Hospital
