    • Newark Advertiser 25/6/2018 reported: 'War memorial to remain in Newark Cemetery, A memorial that remembers Newark’s war dead is to stay in place after a stonemason said it could break up if moved. The Memorial To The Fallen — three slabs of black granite — were put in Newark Cemetery in 2007, bearing the names of 604 men from Newark who died in conflicts from the first world war to Afghanistan. There are 457 names from the first world war and 144 from the second. Newark Town Council looked into dismantling the memorial and re-erecting it at Newark Parish Church as part of commemorations to mark the end of the first world war. Town clerk Mr Alan Mellor told a meeting of the finance and general purposes committee a stonemason had assessed if the project was viable. He decided the only way to dismantle the memorial would be to break the base, leaving the three leaves. He said there was no guarantee that could be done without damaging them. "There is the risk that in trying to dismantle the current memorial it will be damaged to an extent that effectively destroys it," said Mr Mellor. "To damage the current memorial could be seen as an insult to the memory of the names on the memorial and their families." Committee member Mr Keith Girling said the memorial should not have been put in the cemetery. He said the Royal British Legion had objected to the location but was over-ruled by the council. Mr Girling suggested plaques with the names of all of those who died during the conflicts should be put on an existing stone memorial in the grounds of the parish church. "It would be a good legacy for the town that those who have given their lives are remembered in an appropriate place," he said. Councillors decided not to relocate the memorial or install a new one in the church gardens. Instead, it was agreed that work should be carried out to clean the existing memorial at the church and refresh the existing inscription. The council will also look at adding plaques with the names of those who died. It was decided that work should be carried out near the church memorial, renovating stone pillars and a wall next to Appletongate, creating access for the disabled, and installing extra flower planters along the boundary. The council will look at a potential project to improve church gardens to the north of Church Walk, in conjunction with the church and Newark and Sherwood District Council. https://www.newarkadvertiser.co.uk/news/war-memorial-to-remain-in-newark-cemetery-9043264/
