WMR Reference Number: 59976
Description: Original wooden Battlefield Cross with three identity tags. An engraved metal plaque is also fixed to the centre of the Cross. The identity tags on the cross member have been relocated to accommodate the plaque .Curiously, on the reverse side of the Cross is a second recorded name inscribed directly into the wood, just discernable through layers of paint. Further investigations show that both men were engaged in the same battle, died on the same day and were buried in the same cemetery in adjacent graves ..
Inscription: 3 tags on front of Cross : [ G. R. C. ] / [ CAPT. PARTRIDGE. ] [ 5TH. DRAGOON GDS. 8-9-14 ] Plaque at centre of Cross : In Loving Memory / of Captain Partridge / 5th. Dragoon Guards / Killed in Action / September 8th. 1914 Reverse of Cross : In Jesus’ Mercy + / CAPT DARGLESH / BLACK WATCH / RIP
