    • Box of Records at Lancashire Record Office-DDX 3143 In 2004 as a result of representation by a small number of village residents, Sabden Parish Council sent a circular to every house in the village in which they asked the village residents if they wanted a permanent war memorial. The response was very positive and at a subsequent Parish Council meeting the public present showed a preference for the proposed memorial site to be on the existing rose garden in the village. A previous memorial to Nurse Stephenson was placed there in 1904 and it was agreed this memorial would be moved to another part of the rose garden. An exhibition was held displaying different types of war memorial during which residents voted on a Celtic cross. In 2006 a Sabden War Memorial Trust was formed, the members of the Trust being Antony Haworth (Chairman), Simon Mount (Historian), Christine Cartwright (Cashier), Frances Haworth (Clerk) and Bernard Parfit (Local Advisor). The Trust was subsequently registered as a charity and plans for the memorial were drawn up by a member of the Lancashire County Council Environment Directorate. From June 2006 the work of acquiring the necessary finance began and the Trust held a number of fund raising events including bowling nights, a tea dance and a table top sale. The neccessary funds were raised and the memorial was produced and installed in 2008. A service of dedication took place on the 25th May 2008 and was attended by members of the Trust, residents of the village, members of the Forces and a local MP. The responsibility for the war memorial was passed from the Trust to the Sabden Parish Council in 2011. The war memorial has won several awards including commendations and in 2015 won Best Kept War Memorial in the Lancashire Best Kept Village Competition.
