WMR Reference Number: 64952
Description: Fourteen battlefield crosses of casualties with connections to Burwash , (Two casualties each have two crosses poor legibility prevents examination of this unusual occurence ) together with a rectangular black plaque stating the names of the casualties and the location of the crosses. The crosses are fixed high in the church porch . As a result of their location and in some cases condition legibility is poor and reference has been made to CWGC records to verify details . The cross for Wiiliam Langridge is a memorial not a grave marker He is buried in St Bartholomew Churchyard . The cross for F C Balcombe was created by German forces and had the GRU/IWGC white metal strips added at a later date. L/Cpl J G Fuller has no known grave , the Cross should be seen as a memorial not a grave maker.
Inscription: Plaque /THE FIRST WORLD WAR BATTLE FIELD CROSSES IN THIS PORCH WERE RECOVERED/ FROM FRANCE AND FLANDERS UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE CHURCH ARMY./ THEY WERE ORIGINALLY UNVEILED ON 22nd JUNE 1924./ RESTORED AND REDEDICATED ON 10th MARCH 2015./ NORTH WALL (FROM RIGHT TO LEFT)/ (names)/ SOUTH WALL (FROM LEFT TO RIGHT)/ (names)/ Cross for H Langridge /J 93003 BOY H LANGRIDGE/CLASS W ROYAL NAVY/HMS GANGES/ Cross for Pte T Park/240738/PTE PARKS T/5th Royal Sussex Regt Pioneers/KILLED /IN/ACTION/15.9.17/ Cross for Cpl S Taylor/CORPL S TAYLOR/5TH ROYAL SUSSEX PIONEERS/KILLED IN ACTION/22.9.17/ Cross for Cpl F Balcombe/ENGLANDER/FREDERICK BALCOMBE/Royal Scots 47550/3.9.17./ The remaining crosses have insufficient legibility to record wording .
