Description: Two sculptured figures mounted on pillar with 3-stepped base. Sculptured soldier in Boer War campaign dress with rifle, standing guard over a wounded bugler boy lying on ground. Sculptures set atop narrowing pillar of pink granite with bronze laurel wreath detail afixed to each side. Borough coat of arms mounted on pillar below wreath on 6 o'clock face. Inscriptions and names gilded onto pillar pedastal with colonette framing in grey granite. Base flanked by 2 9-pound field guns and surrounded by iron chain fence.
Inscription: 6 o'clock face: THIS MONUMENT/ TO THE MEMORY OF THE SWANSEA MEN/ WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE/ SOUTH AFRICAN WAR 1900-1-2/ WAS RAISED AT A COST OF £500, CONTRIBUTED/ BY THEIR FELLOW TOWNS PEOPLE TO A SHILLING FUND/ UNVEILED 15TH APRIL 1904/ BY/ THE MAYOR OF SWANSEA,/ GRIFFITH THOMAS, ESQ. 3 o'clock face: KILLED IN ACTION/ LEST WE FORGET/ (Names) 12 o'clock face: DIED OF DISEASE/ LEST WE FORGET/ (Names) 9 o'clock face: FOR THAT FAIR MOTHERLAND WHICH GAVE THEM BIRTH/ NOBLY TO DARE NOBLY TO DIED

Maintenance History: 1984, November: Lettering re-gilded. 1984, October: Rifle sculpture vandalised. Aluminum original replaced with fibreglass replica. c1930s: Relocated from Victoria Park to opposite side of Mumbles Road. Field guns were lost.
