    • The Scotsman - Thursday 12 May 1927 ARDNAMURCHAN WAR MEMORIAL https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000540/19270512/054/0010 ARDNAMURCHAN war memorial was unveiled yesterday by Colonel Maclean of Ardgour, and the ceremony in connection therewith was attended by a large gathering . The memorial, which is situated close to the public road , immediately to the west of Caberfeidh House, is a square tower about 14 feet high, surmounted by four turrets, and stands on an elevated rocky knoll, the whole height exceeding 18 feet. On the side facing the road and looking seawards, the names of the fallen are inscribed on a polished-granite tablet. The proceedings began with a short religious service in the Parish Church , conducted by the Rev. N. G. Macdonald. Colonel Maclean reading the lesson. The Dead March in "Saul" was played on the organ by Miss Wallace, Oban, after which the company were formed into a procession four deep, and, preceded by a piper playing "Lochaber no More" and "Flowers of the Forest," marched to the monument, which was covered by the Union Jack. Colonel Maclean stepped up, and, unveiling the monument, read the names of the fallen, and, continuing, said the memorial would stand there a silent yet speaking monument to the fact that Ardnamurchan gave of her best in the service of King and country and of the civilised world. He must remind them of something which was too often now forgotten. They seemed so far away thoso first few months of the war, when it looked as if nothing would stop the enemy. Had the Germans been victorious, our land would have become suclh a holocaust of incendiarism, rapine and slaughter that civilisation would have rocked, and tottered. Our nation, would, have been ground under the heel of a fearful vengeance. Let them not forgot, that it was to protect their families and homes from such horrors that their young men marched out to meet and fight the enemy. It iwas in achieving this purpose that these men whose names were graven on the monument beside him met a glorious death. A short dedication prayer by Mr Macdonald was followed, by the laying of numerous wreaths by relatives of the fallen, and the sounding of the Reveille brought the proceedings to a close,
