- Description
- Garden of remembrance on a cliff overlooking the harbour, with a paved area and four sloping granite tablets bearing names. When dedicated in 2014 there were two tablets, one each side of a fence adorned with cast bronze poppies, and a central flagpole. Two smaller tablets, one each side, have been added subsequently. Three of the tablets carry names in alphabetical order regardless of their conflict, some are shown as both WW1 and WW2, and some are shown without a conflict. The fourth tablet carries the names of civilians who lost their lives in the course of their duties (Police and RNLI).
A tablet recording the rededication in 2014 is mounted on the left-hand entrance pillar to the Garden. Although the tablet states that the Garden was 'Rededicated', the garden which had originally been dedicated on the site in 1975, the Royal British Legion Garden of Remembrance (see WMR 104088), was completely dismantled and no elements of it appear in the present Garden.
The original garden carried individual plaques for each name, with details of service and date of death, and was a mixture of the war dead and of those who died of natural causes later. The present memorial tablets appear to carry the same names forward, along with additional names, but only the conflict(s) in which they served, and their units (with many exceptions), with no differentiation to show who died in service in wartime.
