    • [Compiled from various sources]- This casualty is known of through the family gravestone 1Z70 at Preston Quarter Cemetery. He was lost at sea in December 1901 when HMS Condor foundered on passage from Esquimalt Island, Vancouver to Honolulu. All 103 crew were lost. The exact circumstances and date of the foundering are not known, as the ship was never found, but she is believed to have foundered in a hurricane a day or two after leaving Esquimalt. The barque-rigged steam sloop Condor (built at Sheerness in 1898) left Esquimalt Island Vancouver for Honolulu, some 2,580 miles away, on 2nd December 1901. She was never seen again. A search was instigated on the 24th January 1902 after failing to arrive at Honolulu and HMS Phaeton was dispatched to follow the likely track of Condor, nothing was found. Later the SS Queen City arrived at Victoria from the West coast of Vancouver Island and reported that off Ahousett she had picked up a white boat bearing a broad arrow and the letter "C" in brass on her bow. This was later identified as belonging to the Condor. Later further small items of wreckage were found and it was assumed that Condor encountered a hurricane when 50 - 100 miles out and she foundered with all 103 crew. He was aged 26, and was the son of Joseph Johnston who died 5th May 1920 aged 75, and Margaret who died at Fletchertown, Allhallows on 1st March 1930 aged 81. Joseph was a Blacksmith, and lived at Bentincks Row, Whitehaven in 1881 and 1891 and at Pottery Road, Whitehaven by 1911 where he died.
