Inside the Book-
PREFACE/This ROLL OF HONOUR/has been compiled by the/Town Council at the frequently expresses wish of the/Burgesses, who have naturally desired to have recorded/in some permanent form the names of those Men of/our Town who offered their lives in the common cause./
It is a record of which the Borough may well be/proud. It contains no less than 2,383 names of men/who served in the Forces during the Great War. Of/this number no less than 314 (whose names are printed/in heavier type)/have laid down their lives.
The utmost pains have been taken to make the/record a complete one. Many hundreds of enquiries/have been addressed to Sailors and Soldiers and their/relatives, and in numerous cases personal visits have/been paid.
The Roll has also been revised by the Clergymen/of the Borough and others, who possess records, and to whom the thanks of the Committee are due.
It is feared, nevertheless, that there may be/omissions. The difficulty experienced in this respect/is due to the fact that those who most willingly offered/their services are the most unwilling to pose as heroes/or claim recognition. In particular, it is certain that/the record of decorations (numerous as they appear) is by no means complete.
The Roll of Honour constitutes a sufficiently im-/pressive record of the services rendered by Whitehaven/in the Great War, but it is by no means an exhaustive/one.
Some idea of the activities of the Borough in/other essential respects may be gathered from the fact/that, notwithstanding the heavy enlistments of men/from the Whitehaven Collieries, no less than 2,234,806/tons of coal were produced during the War, whilst in/adddition to the ordinary day-by-day investments in/War Funds the sum of £970,452 was raised by special/efforts for the purpose of providing War material. On/the occasion of "Business Men's Week", 4th to 9th/March, 1918, the Borough took the high position of/fifth place amongst all the towns of England, Wales/and Scotland, on the basis of population./
