    Maintenance History
The memorial was originally unveiled in October 1924, bearing the WW1 inscription and names of villagers who had died; at that time, custodianship of the memorial was passed to Ryhope Parish Council. In September 1950 the bronze plaques bearing the WW2 inscription and names of villagers who had died were unveiled. In November 1985 the plaque commemorating Cyril Joe Barton VC was unveiled. In 1990 the memorial was damaged by vandals, who dislodged a granite support pillar and removed regimental badges; they also unsuccessfully tried to remove the bronze plaques bearing the casualties' names. The memorial was Grade II listed on 17/10/1994 (List Entry Number 1207138).
