Type of Memorial: Stone of remembrance
WMR Reference Number: 72899
Description: A rectangular metal plaque set into the top of a roughcast square block of stone. The plaque is inscribed with a columnar-arranged roll of honour of the war dead of both World Wars and decorated with two red poppies flanking the commemoration. There is a further smaller metal information plaque set into the front face of the stone. A flagpole is erected behind the stone.
Inscription: THIS PLAQUE COMMEMORATES THE PEOPLE OF CRAWLEY DOWN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY/ 1914-1918/ (Names...)/ 1939-1945/ (Names...)/ THIS ROLL OF HONOUR REPLACES THE MARBLE TABLET WHICH RESIDED IN THE METHODIST CHAPEL IN SANDY LANE UNTIL THE CHAPEL WAS DECONSECRATED AND SOLD IN THE 1980'S./ THIS MEMORIAL WAS TOO DAMAGED TO BE SAVED. (Smaller plaque): PLEASE STAND TO ATTENTION/ AND JUST FOR A MINUTE OR TWO/ THINK OF THESE BRAVE SOLDIERS/ AND WHAT THEY GAVE FOR YOU./ THIS ROLL OF HONOUR WAS UNVEILLED ON JUNE 6TH 2015/ BY/ JEREMY QUINN (sic) MP TO COMMEMORATE THE CENTENARY OF WW 1./ ERECTED BY ROGER WEBB & PHILIP COOTE ON BEHALF OF THE RESIDENTS OF CRAWLEY DOWN.
