- Description
- The Memorial comprises a steel spire, surrounded by a concentric circle of freestanding steel walls. The Spire consists of two 'wing' fragments, the tallest of which is 31.09 metres (102 feet) high (i.e. the exact wing span of a Lancaster bomber); the shorter of the 'wing' fragments is 78.7 feet/ 24 metres tall. Set in concentric circles around the Spires' base are steel 'Walls of Names', recording each of the men and women known to have lost their lives while serving in/ supporting Bomber Command.
(The 23 walls currently record nearly 58, 000 'known' names; further casualties' names will continue to be added to Walls as/when they are identified).
[The Spire and Walls of Names are set within 10 acres of landscaped grounds at the International Bomber Command Centre, which include:
1) 'The International Peace Garden' (honouring more than 60 nations' involvement in Bomber Command: each continent being represented by a bed of their native plants, and a stone sculpture).
2) The Lincolnshire Peace Garden' (containing 27 native trees, each commemorating one of the operational Bomber Command stations in the county in WW2; a plaque at the base of each tree records the name of the station, the squadrons that served there and the number of losses).
3) The 'Op Manna' Garden and Sculpture (at the entrance to the Chadwick Centre, to which our record WMR 105886 relates)].
