    • Luton Reporter Tuesday 1/11/1921 reported: 'WAR MEMORIAL TO THE COUNTY REGIMENT TO BE UNVEILED BY LORD AND LADY HORNE. General Lord Horne of Stirkoke, Commander in Chief of the Eastern Command, has consented to unveil the war memorial to the Bedfordshire Regiment outside Kempston Barracks on the Day of Remembrance, Friday November 11th, at 2.30. The distinguished General. who commanded the First Army in France. will unveil the obelisk which represents the martial side of the memorial, and Lady Horne will unveil and open the shrine. which betokens the religious aspect of the tribute to the memory of the heroic dead of the County Regiment, while the Lord Bishop of St. Albans has consented to perform 'the dedication. Lieut.-General the Earl of Cavan. of the Aldershot. Command. was in the first instance asked to perform the unveiling, it being considered that nobody could more fitly represent public opinion in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Huntingdonshire on such an occasion than the great soldier whom we are proud to claim as a resident in our midst Lord Cavan's presence would have been as welcome to the residents in general of the two counties with which he has so long been associated, and in a letter to Lord Ampthill the general wrote that he would have been proud to have paid his tribute to the men of Beds. and Herts. with whom he served. but the fact that he has been ordered to go to Washington as head of the Military Mission the conference makes it impossible to comply with the request. "Nothing but absence from England would have prevented me from accepting the invitation," Lord Cavan wrote. "I am indeed much gratified at the request. for I can never forget what the men of my own county and my own Hunt did for me and for their homes in the early days of the war."' https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0002208/19211101/054/0004
