    Description
The memorial is made up of six individual limestone panels inset into a red brick wall panel, centred between two Romanesque arched windows. Three main plaques form the body of the memorial, with three corresponding stones directly above the main stones which are built into the wall, sitting proud of the facing brick surround. The focus of the memorial is the central panel featuring a fielded laurel leaf framed inset in relief terracotta alongside the portrait of Edward Workman. Either side of Edward are panels inscribed with names of over 120 men from the shipyard who fell in the Great War. All inscriptions are raised, the face of the lettering flush being with the stone surface. The memorial has been latterly protected with a single 10mm thick pane of clear polycarbonate in an attempt to control the extent of weathering. The design consists of a portrait of Edward Workman, flanked by the names of men from the shipyard and was originally supported by a pictorial frieze showing the story from enlistment to battlefield. In 2018-2019 the polycarbonate was removed, and replaced with an aluminium coated powder frame and toughened glass doors. Over time the original number commemorated was increased to 136. Due to the very poor condition of the memorial there is now an impressive Roll of Honour at the nearby HMC Caroline Museum- with far more information- image attached.
