PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 09.03.1921 AUCHTERGAVEN WAR MEMORIAL THE UNVEILING CEREMONY Notwithstanding the wintry nature of the weather on Sunday, a large gathering assembled at the Kirk and the Kirk Hillock to witness the unveiling of the War Memorial. In the first place, the site was handed over by His Grace the Duke of Atholl to Mr James Paton, J.P., who accepted on behalf of the Parish Council, of which body he is chairman. The Hundredth Psalm having been sung, the Rev. A. M. Wyllie, minister of the parish, briefly outlined what had been undertaken in the way of preparing for and erecting the cairn, thanking His Grace for the representation of the site, and paying a tribute to those who had been most active in the work: the 78 fallen heroes, whose names were engraved on the tablet - men drawn from all sections and conditions in the parish: they had fallen at various fronts and at various times during the long years of the bitter struggle, and the parish to which they belonged would never forget. His Grace then unveiled the memorial. The consecration prayer being offerd by the Rev. J. Grassick, U.F. Church, Bankfoot, and the names of the fallen were read aloud by the Rev. A. M. Wyllie. The lament by Piper R. Irvine, and the “Last Post”, as sounded by Bugler R. Wilson were perfect, and served to round off a beautiful and solemn little ceremony. The tablet of bronze set into the side of the rustic cairn, which, as has already been stated in these columns is situated near the Parish Church. The tablet bears the following names:- SEC. LIEUT. DAVID YOUNG, At the dedicatory service which followed in the church, the Rev. George Thompson, C.F., preached from Exodus xii. 26 “What mean ye by this service”. Mr Thompson, himself the son of a soldier who earned the V.C., in the course of his sermon stated that one of his earliest recollections was witnessing the unveiling of a memorial to soldiers who fell in the Crimea and the Indian Mutiny, seated on his father’s shoulders. There were many children present that day. They would not forget, and the memorial would serve to remind future generations. The lessons were read by the Rev. N. Farquhar Orr, Stanley.
