Description: Pillar with cornice and curved wall with names. Egg and dart moulding on the cornice and a classical wreath on the front face. "The memorial consists of cenotaph, with low curved ring walls and platform raised two steps from the ground, all hewn out of Hopeman stone. The, centre stone stands 10 feet high, and finished with a carved with egg and anchor ornament. Surmounting the inscription is a finely carved wreath with enriched scroll hearing the inscription, " For God, King and Country," and in the platform there is a beautifully shaped stone flower bowl. "

PORTSOY, BOTRIPHNIE, NAIRN, KEITH, AND FOCHABERS. IMPRESSIVE UNVEILING CEREMONIES. A memorial was unveiled on Sunday afternoon in memory of the soldiers of Botriphnie parish who fell in the war. The memorial consists of cenotaph, with low curved ring walls and platform raised two steps from the ground, all hewn out of Hopeman stone. The, centre stone stands 10 feet high, and finished with a carved with egg and anchor ornament. the face oif the stone is t.he following inscription— "In memory of the silent dead," and in a sunk panel the base is the inscription—" In perpetuam memoriam." The outstanding inscription is — "To the glory of God and in memory of the men of this parish who died in the War, 1914-1919." The names of the fallen are:— (names) Surmounting the inscription is a finely carved wreath with enriched scroll hearing the inscription, " For God, King and Country," and in the platform there is a beautifully shaped stone flower bowl. Dedication Service. A dedication joint service of the Parish and U.F. Churches was held Drummuir Hall in the afternoon, conducted by the Rev. M'Kay and the Rev. D. G. Garrow. The combined choirs, under Miss Blackie, organist, led the music A short address given by the Rev. Mr M'Kay. There was a large gathering present The congregation then retired to the memorial, the "Flowers of the Forest" being played by Piper Garden, late of the 6th Gordons. The unveiling ceremony was taken part in by Mr Thos Gordon Duff of Drummuir and Park and the Rt Hon. H. J. Tennant Edinglassie, Strathdon, late Under-Secretary for War. Mr Duff's Address. Mr Gordon-Duff, in his address. said:- Fellow-parishioners, I think we may that the war really began for us on 7th August, 1914, when may remember the Dufftown Company marched down here, and was joined by many of our sons. l am not going into a long history of the war, but I am simply confine myself to a few facts which may interest you. The population this parish — this parish is not a large one — when the last census was taken it was 732, and I proud to think we sent 70 men, who served, and of those 18 gave their lives. The 6th Gordons were among the first who went to France, and they were severely tried, you may remember, in the following spring the great battle of Neuve Chapelle. We are proud to think that our county battalion kept their reputation on that memorable occasion. Our men fought over the whole of Europe from Gallipoli to France, and fought in Asia. We cannot forget them. We pass away and are forgotten, and we are anxious that, our children and our children's children will remember the men in whose names have erected our memorial. Before closing I think we may consider what those who have fallen would have wished most. I am certain there is one thing they would have wished most, and that is peace. All those who were wounded and those who went through the turmoil and mud of the trenches would all wish that their folk at home should live in peace. They gave their services and they gave their lives in order to protect from an enemy. They gave their lives for might against right and for justice. They would have wished that should live in peace, and I trust that shall live at peace in future. It lies for each one us do what we can to promote peace at home. No one should go to war with a light heart. The Rev. A. M'Kay delivered the dedicatory prayer and the unveiling was performed by Master R. Gordon Duff of Park House. The * Last Poet " sounded bv Bugler Wilson, Inverurie, also late of the 6th Gordons. The side, pillars were hung with laurel wreaths, while floral wreath at the base of the main pillar added a fitting tribute to the sacred dead, the gifts of Mrs Gordon Duff. The Castle. A large illuminated memorial has been hung in Drummoir Hall containing the names the fallen and those who have returned. The work, chaste in design and workmanship, was done by Miss Katherine Gordon Duff, Drummuir Castle.
