Damage to Names Not as Great as Was Believed. Following upon statements at a meeting of Stonehaven Town Council on Tuesday alleging that the Stonehaven War Memorial had been the subject of desecration and malicious damage, a "Press and Journal" representative yesterday visited the memorial to investigate the mischief done. Although it is unfortunate that a monument erected in commemoration of the sons of the burgh who gave their lives the Great War should suffer even the slightest defacement, it was found yesterday that the damage done was of minor nature and obviously the work of children. In Good Repair. Standing on the summit of the Black Hill overlooking the bay of Stonehaven, the Memorial, built several years after the War, is in a state of good repair. The Roll of Honour is inscribed in raised lead letters on a large four-sided granite tablet, and a number of these letters, about thirty in all, have been battered and misshapen. It was observed that none of the letters interfered with is beyond the reach of small children, who, armed with stones, could easily have defaced the soft metal by light blows. Only two letters have been wholly removed, but in no case is a name unreadable. Children's Playground. During the suruner months the hill on which the memorial stands is open the schoolchildren, many of whom play there. No complaint has ever been lodged with the police regarding the matter. Quite a number of Stonehaven people, relatives of men who fell in the War, alarmed by the statements that namas had been obliterated, went to the Memorial yesterday, and all expressed relief that the damage was not as great as they had thought.
