    Description
A Rectangular framed panel, which comprises two sections. The upper section has a Merseyside Police crest, which is surrounded by a mosaic/collage of poppies (some of which have hand-written messages, such as 'We will always remember the people who lost their lives, the soldiers that fought and served' and 'We will always remember the families that lost loved ones'). The lower section is etched with the names of 160 WW1 casualties from Merseyside Police's heritage Forces. Between the upper and lower sections is a small wooden panel that bears the inscription. (Some of those named on this memorial are also commemorated on the memorials that were erected shortly after WW1 by their original Police Force, i.e. Birkenhead Borough Police, Liverpool City Police, St Helens Borough Constabulary, Southport Borough Police, Wallasey Borough Police; see our separate records re each of those memorials. The identity of further casualties from those former Police Forces who are named on the memorial was ascertained from research undertaken by volunteers from Merseyside Police).

    Maintenance History
Merseyside Police was formed in 1974, and is an amalgamation of the following individual Forces that were previously responsible for policing the relevant geographical area: Birkenhead Borough Police, Bootle Borough Police, Liverpool City Police, St Helens Borough Constabulary, Southport Borough Police and Wallasey Borough Police. The Poppy Mosaic Memorial was created in 2018, as part of Merseyside Police's commemoration of officers from all those heritage Forces who died in WW1. (The names and details of the casualties listed on the memorial were sourced from the original Police Forces' own surviving WW1 memorials, and also from extensive research carried out by retired officers and volunteers of Merseyside Police, who traced many further former Officers who died in that War; the poppies in the upper section of the memorial were made by local schoolchildren; some of the poppies have hand-written Remembrance messages from the children). Following a service on 8/11/2018 at St Nicholas Church in Liverpool, at which the memorial was displayed, it was installed above the Reception desk in Merseyside Police HQ. (Since the memorial was erected, continuing research by Merseyside Police volunteers has identified some further casualties).

    • Merseyside Police's message to local schools in 2018 regarding the memorial read: "MERSEYSIDE POLICE WITH THANKS – POPPY MOSAIC Merseyside Police have been commemorating 160 officers who fell in World War One on this very special Centenary year. We started off by planting around 50,000 poppy seeds within the boundary of Police HQ with 20 school children from our Mini Police scheme. We designed plaques which were attached to Police HQ railings listing all of the officers’ names. Officers & staff from within force held the plaques and made a video to commemorate the fallen officers. Shore Cottage studios helped us by creating the force crest we would use in the center [sic] of the mosaic and also made the frame & etched the names of the officers. We asked for your help to create Poppies to fill the Poppy Mosaic incorporating the Police Force crest and the officer’s names. This mosaic will be used as part of a Church service we are holding on the 8th of November, and will later take pride of place at Police HQ. Many thanks for the beautiful poppies that the children in your school sent to us, they were all used either within the mosaic, or in one of the wreaths, or within a cascade of poppies we also made for the Church service". "WW1 CENTENARY 13,000 people from Liverpool lost their lives in the First World War, of these were 160 police officers. Within police stations in Merseyside there are commemorative plaques detailing the names of the officers we lost during the conflict. This plaque brings all of their names into one place. We will remember them". http://www.bleakhill.st-helens.sch.uk/serve_file/295169
    • On 17/4/2018 theguideliverpool.com published the following report: "Merseyside Police remember offices killed in WW1 with 25,000 poppies. Merseyside Police are remembering their officers who died in the First World War by commemorating the Centenary by breathing new life into the boundary of Police HQ at Canning Place with 25,000 poppies planted by local school children. Preparations will start with 19 children from local schools will be ready with their plant pots and garden trowels to start off the planting of poppies on Tuesday, 17 April at 10.30am. The poppies will be fully grown in time for the Centenary on 11 November 2018. The children will each be presented with a certificate to thank them for all of their hard work and will be served lunch in the police staff canteen. Emma Jones IS Service Improvements Manager came up with the idea to commemorate the officers who died, she said: “I was really keen to do something special to remember our officers who sacrificed their lives in the First World War. Within the first few months of the First World War almost 600 city policemen had signed up for active service overseas with officers from Birkenhead, Southport and St Helens. Over the four years of war, 13,726 servicemen died from the Merseyside area with 153 police officers losing their lives.” The project will continue later in the year with the placing of signs on the railings of HQ with the names of the 153 officers next to the poppies. A pin badge will be created along with the Royal British Legion combining the Merseyside Police Crest and officers and staff will also take part in a video holding the names of the fallen officers. A mosaic made out of poppies from school children will also be created and there will be a special remembrance service on 8 November 2018 at 11am at St Nicholas Church, Liverpool". https://theguideliverpool.com/merseyside-police-remember-offices-killed-in-ww1-with-25000-poppies/
