    • 'Debden Parish Pump' September 2015: A special edition to commemorate the role of RAF Debden in the Battle of Britain, and of the dedication of the new memorial plaque commemorating British and American aircrew who served at RAF Debden during WW2, pages 4 and 5 of which recorded: "'The roar from the engines of planes that flew in the Battle of Britain will be heard once again in the skies above Debden. A flypast of WW2 aircraft will be one of the highlights of the unveiling and dedication of a memorial that recalls the role our local airfield played in that decisive battle 75 years ago', writes Mike Fairchild. On the afternoon of Saturday September 19 (see below for details) local residents, veterans, civic leaders and representatives of the Royal Air Force and the United States Air Force will gather at what is now Carver Barracks to remember and honour the heroism and the sacrifice of airmen and women from both sides of the Atlantic who helped defeat Nazi Germany. The ceremony will coincide with the culmination of national events to mark the Battle of Britain. The memorial was provided by Uttlesford District Council, built by local monumental masons Whitehead & Day and bears a plaque whose inscription was devised by Keith Braybrooke. The existing commemorative stone belonging to the US 4th Fighter Group has been relocated close to the new memorial. The memorial site, including the recently‐discovered Pickett‐Hamilton Fort pill box, has been created by Royal Engineers and will be part of a planned heritage trail. The memorial will be unveiled by William Clark, a Volunteer Reserve Warrant Officer pilot who learned to fly the Hurricane at RAF Debden in 1941. He went on to serve in North Africa via Malta, to which he flew off the deck of the aircraft carrier Ark Royal. He was shot down in the desert and became a prisoner of war. The dedication will be conducted by a chaplain of the RAF and there will be contributions by the Royal Engineers and the US Air Force". http://debden.org/sites/default/files/parishpump/pumpsep15.pdf
